Authors | Deepwell, K. |
Abstract | In this interview Katy Deepwell talks to Catherine de Zegher, curator of Inside the Visible: An Elliptical Traverse of the Twentieth Century, in, of, and from the feminine. In this interview, de Zegher discusses her strategies in this exhibition compared to her curation of America: Bride of the Sun and in the small solo shows she organised at the Beguinage in Kortrijk. The distinctive approach of this exhibition as "a new moment in feminism" is discussed. de Zegher's approach to how individual women artists were presented in distinct groupings and with works from different periods of their life is discussed. The relation of the curatorial strategy to concepts from feminist theory and the research of feminist art history are discussed in terms of how the exhibition deploys or reuses or shifts categories of thought about art practices. This important exhibition was an international touring exhibition, first shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art,Boston (Feb 1996); then the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, October-December 1996) and The Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth (1997). Catherine de Zegher is the Director of the Kanaal Art Foundation in Kortrijk, Belgium. |
