Abstract | Examines the work of the Lebanese artist Mona Hatoum, whose work is included in the exhibition Rites of Passage at the Tate Gallery, in London (15 June-3 Sept. 1995). The author notes that Hatoum's work is a combination of sculpture, installation, performance, photography and video, and comments on the participation which viewing her work requires from the spectator. She describes the pieces which are included in the exhibition, focusing particularly on the most recent piece Corps Etranger, which uses video and audio technology to present a representation of the female body photographed internally and externally using microscopic medical probes, and discusses the issues raised by such a representation. |
