Abstract | Discusses the nature of painting in terms of both feminist art and women's art with reference to the exhibition Unbound Possibilities in Painting at the Hayward Gallery in London (3 March-30 May 1994). The author considers the history of paintings by women in relation to that of modernism and of feminism in photography, performance and mixed media installations. She outlines Griselda Pollock's concept of the relationship between painting, feminism and theory and John Roberts's formulation of three feminist approaches to painting: `anti-painting', `anti-functionalist', and `female centred'. She concludes that the issue of the feminist potential of painting has still not been resolved. |
