Title | Emerging trends in web-based learning: the use of e-portfolios |
Authors | Dafoulas, G. |
Abstract | This paper is concerned with emerging trends in web-based learning and more specifically the methods of learner and learning support in e-learning. The study focuses on web-based learning needs and how they are addressed through services and tools available through the use of e-portfolios. An attempt is made to establish new ways of supporting online learners to cope with time and distance constraints. Such constraints are often affecting the curriculum offered in distance education mode. The paper suggests using e-portfolios for learner and learning support as an emerging trend in web-based learning. A framework is suggested for mapping learner needs and learning activities to portfolio functions. This framework is tested against data from 32 online modules over 5 undergraduate and postgraduate courses delivered through distance education programmes and supported by virtual learning environments. The paper concludes by discussing the positive effects of e-portfolio applications in web-based learning. |
