Abstract | The paper reviews the findings of evidence-based research conducted by Middlesex University, UK as part of an ongoing learner-centred evaluation of the quality of the courses provided to, amongst others, Asian students studying in the UK and overseas. Most critically, the findings delineate the areas where culturally distinct characteristics of learning and teaching emerged with particular reference to the use of technology, student expectations and the role of tutor. Theories on cultural differences are also discussed from an organisational and pedagogical point of view. The paper synthesizes the findings from two studies and a European Union funded research project with the aim of examining the implications for teaching and learning in cross-cultural settings. In the light of the findings, the paper explores the requirements for the use of culturally appropriate teaching in the UK educational system which should acknowledge cultural diverse learning perspectives. |
