| Abstract | Strength and conditioning has traditionally been guided by deterministic models, in which specific training inputs are assumed to yield predictable outcomes. However, such linear cause-and-effect reasoning fails to account for the biological complexity, contextual variability, and individual differences that characterise real-world sport performance. This paper argues that strength and conditioning is better understood as an integrative and probabilistic discipline, in which training outcomes emerge from interacting adaptive systems rather than fixed inputs. By distinguishing between domains where deterministic versus probabilistic reasoning is appropriate, and by emphasising the interpretive role of the practitioner in evidence-based practice, the paper positions uncertainty as a practical feature of coaching rather than a flaw to be eliminated. The result is a conceptual framework for decision-making under uncertainty in which evidence, expertise, context, and foundational principles are integrated to guide applied strength and conditioning practice. |
