Abstract | This study examined the acute performance enhancing effects of a clean pull performed at 120% of clean and jerk (C&J) maximum (1RM), on 90% of a clean 1RM. These effects were analysed in eight ranked competitive weightlifters. Kinetic and kinematic variables relating to impulse, peak force, barbell displacement, and peak power of the clean were measured using two force plates synchronised with a 3D motion capture system. Endocrinological responses of testosterone, cortisol, and their ratio were also measured in response to the 120% clean pull, post activation potentiation (PAP) stimulus. Results indicated that no significant differences were found between the control and PAP condition, while effect size analysis revealed trivial to moderate changes (d = -0.67 to 0.14, [-1.27 to 1.12]), displaying both positive and negative effects. Further analysis on individual percentage change within the five most reliable kinetic and kinematic variables, again demonstrated both positive and negative values, ranging from -13% to 27%. |
